Onderzoekslijn Genetische Epidemiologie

Inleiding

Deze onderzoekslijn richt zich op het inschatten van het belang van genetische en omgevingsinvloeden van het fysieke prestatievermogen tijdens de adolescente groeifase en de volwassenheid. Tweeling- en familiestudies kwantificeren de heritabiliteit van deze kenmerken. Gestuurd vanuit de hoge genetische bepaaldheid van spierkracht en trainbaarheid van spierkracht wordt momenteel de lokalisatie van onderliggende genen voor skeletale spierkracht bepaald. Een eerste fase houdt de detectie van genomische gebieden in, waarbinnen genen liggen die interindividuele variatie in spierkracht kunnen verklaren en dit a.h.v. een grootschalig koppelingsonderzoek. Nadien wordt getracht de specifieke genvarianten te identificeren die de variatie in kracht veroorzaken a.h.v. associatiestudies.
