Programmes of study

Three different study programmes

The Ministry of Education’s regulations ensure a uniform structure for higher education throughout Flanders. At K.U.Leuven there is a variety of study programmes available:

1. Bachelor programmes

Bachelor's programmes are the first stage of university education after secondary school. These programmes comprise 180 ECTS credit points. With two exceptions (philosophy and theology) bachelor's programs at K.U.Leuven are taught in Dutch. International students who wish to register for a Dutch-language programme will have to meet the language requirements.

Our Faculty offers the following bachelor programmes:

2. Initial master programmes

Bachelor programmes are followed by initial master programmes. These consist of 60 or 120 ECTS credit points. Students who wish to register for any of these master programmes must have sufficient knowledge of Dutch (written and oral) and must have completed the prerequisite bachelor programme.

3. Post-initial master programmes

These study programmes provide training at an advanced level. They are aimed at students who already posess a basic academic (initial master) degree or a foreign master diploma. Generally, they provide a wider vision by offering subjects from other academic disciplines and by analyzing academic subjects more in depth. These programmes usually take one year of study. The post-initial master programmes can be in Dutch or in English.

Our Faculty provides the following post-initial master programmes

Doctoral study programme

In addition to these three programmes, there is also a doctoral study programme for those who have ‘excelled’ in their previous studies.
